A group of young people from Neath Port Talbot have won a top award in recognition of their outstanding work on championing the rights of children and young people.

Neath Port Talbot Youth Council were successful in the category of ‘Promoting Young Peopleā€™s Rights’ at the Welsh Governmentā€™s Youth Work Excellence Awards on Friday evening (29th June). The awards are held annually to celebrate the best youth workers and youth work projects across Wales.

The group attended the awards ceremony which was held at Cardiffā€™s Principality Stadium alongside representatives from Neath Port Talbot Councilā€™s Youth Service.

Cllr Peter Rees, Cabinet Member for Education, Skills and Culture, who also attended the awards, said: ā€œI would like to congratulate NPT Youth Council on their success at the Youth Work Excellence Awards 2018. It was a real privilege to be with them at the ceremony and to see their hard work recognised as being one of the best youth initiatives anywhere in Walesā€

ā€œHelping children and young people to have a say in matters that affect them is a priority for Neath Port Talbot Council under our new corporate plan ā€˜Shaping NPTā€™. This award for NPT Youth Council is truly deserved as the group is very active and is making a real contribution in shaping the services and facilities available to young people within Neath Port Talbotā€.

NPT Youth Council empowers people aged 11ā€“25 to have a say and influence change in decisions affecting their lives. The group meet regularly with decision makers to represent the voices of young people and enable their views to be heard.

They have played their part in influencing many projects across the county borough which impact on young people such as the development of a local LGBT provision for young people; the relocation of Sandfields Youth Club; initiating first aid training for pupils in all secondary schools; as well as advocating for action in various youth clubs and most recently for skaters who use Aberavon Skate Park.

NPT Youth Council is also participating at a regional and national level with representatives on the British Youth Council; the UK Youth Parliament; the Childrenā€™s Commissioner’s Young Peopleā€™s Advisory panel; ABMyouth, the first youth health advisory panel in Wales; and a local mental health youth group.
