THREE people have been fined for throwing litter out of a car window along the A40 between Carmarthen and St Clears.
The incident started in McDonald’s in Carmarthen, when council environmental officers saw the rear passenger and driver throw litter out of the window. However, the car drove off before the officers had a chance to approach them.
The vehicle continued along the A40 towards St Clears and more litter was thrown out of the passenger window, blowing across the carriageway and into oncoming traffic.
The offenders have now been identified and issued with fixed penalty notices for £75. If they fail to pay it could result in prosecution in the magistrates court and a fine of up to £2,500.
Executive Board Member for Environmental and Public Protection Cllr Jim Jones said: “Dropping litter is a criminal offence and will not be tolerated.
“The council is working hard to reduce the amount of litter on our roads and we need to encourage drivers and passengers to take their litter home with them.
“Throwing rubbish out of a moving vehicle is dangerous, it sends out the wrong image to tourists and is a danger to wildlife.”
