Traditional folk at national garden

They’ve toured 20 countries across four continents but influential Welsh folk band Fernhill will be playing their first gig in the Mediterranean glasshouse at the National Botanic Garden of Wales on Sunday March 24.

Much decorated and highly regarded, Fernhill are proven innovative cultural ambassadors for Wales and its folk music.

Their style is described as being “intimate enough with the tradition, that they are unafraid to stretch its boundaries”. Central to their sound is the voice of Julie Murphy, described by Time Out as “a must hear, must see singer”. Her fans include music legends Robert Plant and Danny Thompson, both of whom have recorded with her.

This silver-voiced, self-proclaimed “Essex soul girl” will be surrounded by wonderful musicians: fellow founder member Ceri Rhys Matthews, on guitar and flute. They will be joined by Tomos Williams (trumpet) from Aberystwyth, and Tenby-born Christine Cooper, fiddle and voice.

The performance begins at 2pm
