Speaker: Geraint Talfan Davies, Chair of Wales for Europe

Time for the People of Pembrokeshire to speak out against the real costs of Brexit

With the dangers of leaving the European Union growing daily, Pembrokeshire for Europe will be holding its launch meeting this Friday, 27th July at Bloomfield House Community Centre, Narberth, Pembrokeshire SA67 7ES at 7 pm. The speaker will be Geraint Talfan Davies, Chair of Wales for Europe.

Pembrokeshire for Europe is opposed to Brexit and wants the public to have a vote on the final Brexit deal. It works with Wales for Europewhich has supporters from the main political partiesas well non-partysupporters.

The meeting is open to everyone who is concerned about Brexit. Free tickets are available via eventbrite to indicate numbers, but all are welcome. Tickets are not necessary for entry.

Pembrokeshire is particularly vulnerable to Brexit due to its reliance on farming and tourism and its transport links with Ireland. In 2015 the Pembrokeshire economy benefitted by £35 million through EU membership according to the London School of Economics. The Customs Union sustains our ports and ferry services from Fishguard and Pembroke Dock and these are threatened by the risk of a hard border with Ireland.

EU membership gives access to 500 million customersin a single market, including for our fishing industry. The EU is Welsh farming’s biggest export market and Pembrokeshire Early Potatoes is a protected geographical name under EU law, adding value to our produce.

Our health service needs doctors and other clinical staff from the EU.  Pembrokeshire has more Blue Flag beaches than anywhere else in Wales through meeting EU-wide water quality standards and providing EU-funded visitor facilities.

Wales receives more EU funding than itputs in, helping to pay for our roads such as the A40 improvements between Slebech and Penblewin and Bulford Road between Johnston and Tiers Cross. Much of the Pembrokeshire College campus is EU funded and many Pembrokeshire people have skills learnt through European Social Fund Projects. Tourism assets such as Scolton Manor, Carew and Pembroke Castles, Saundersfoot harbour and the Coast restaurant have all benefitted from EU funds.

Pembrokeshire for Europe will listen to local people, organise events, publicise talks/lectures, work with neighbouring groups and demand that we have our say on any final deal and that we avoid a catastrophic ‘no-deal’.

We are looking forward to our opening meeting on 27th July and to setting up a steering group of volunteers to coordinate further events during the rest of Summer and the Autumnatthis critical time.
