An online survey has been opened to gauge support for the possibility of re-opening Brynaman’s historic outdoor swimming pool.

The Lido was built by local people in the 1920s, but closed in 2010 when Carmarthenshire Council said they could not afford to fund necessary repairs.

Ever since then, local people have been lobbying and campaigning to get the pool re-opened.

Eleri Ware of the Brynaman Lido Committee set up the online survey last week and within 48 hours they had had over 1000 responses and a stream of supportive messages on the group’s facebook page.

Eleri, who used to swim at the pool as a child, said : “The response has been phenomenal. There is so much love for the pool and interest in what we’re trying to do to get it re-opened”.

The group also had a successful day with a stall at the Gwyl Y Gwter Fawr on Saturday (14th), where everyone attending was supportive of the idea of getting the lido up and running again as soon as possible.

Jason Rees, also a regular user of the pool before its closure, who helped run the stall on Saturday, said : “The Gwyl is always a great community get-together, and it’s that kind of community spirit we can get back all year round if we get the pool open again like we’re aiming to.”
