Man Looked Directly At Police As He Sped Past Them

A Cross Hands man appeared at Llanelli Law Courts (July 19) accused of drink driving. The alleged offence was said to have taken place on June 29.

James Scott Davies, age 25 of Carmarthen Road, Cross Hands Llanelli pleaded guilty to the single allegation put before him.

Sian Vaughan prosecuting told the court that at 9.30pm on the day in question Davies was spotted by police officers who were on patrol on the Cross Hands roundabout. He was seen to pull out of a side lane in his Ford Focus and had accelerated sharply past them speeding in a 20mph zone. When he passed the police he had looked directly at them the court heard.

Davies had three passengers in his vehicle and smelt strongly of alcohol. A roadside breath test proved positive for alcohol and he was taken into custody where a lower reading of 58mcg within 100ml of breath showed. There were no previous convictions recorded against him.
Hywel Davies representing said his client had pulled out of the Cefneithin Rugby Club before police spotted him. He stated that his client was a plasterer but thankfully a driving disqualification wouldn’t cost him his job.

District Judge Christopher James said to Davies: “Drink driving creates risks to not only yourself but other road users. It also affects the ability to react and was a foolish mistake which will impact on your life no doubt.”

Davies was banned disqualified from driving for 15 months with the opportunity for the IAMS drink drive awareness course. He was ordered to pay a fine of £330, court costs of £85 and a victim surcharge of £33.
