Summer Reading Challenge 2018

The popular Summer Reading Challenge begins on Wednesday 25th July 2018 inNeath, Cwmafan, Pontardawe, Glynneath, Sandfields and Port Talbot libraries.

Last year the Challenge, a unique partnership between The Reading Agency and public libraries across the UK, encouraged more than three quarters of a million children to borrow, reading and talking about their favourite books.

This year’s Reading Challenge theme is Mischief Makers, which is inspired by the popular children’s tittle Beano in celebration of its 80th Anniversary.

The challenge will be launched in Neath library on 25th July 11-12.a.m.The other sessions around the county borough will be in:Pontardawe Library 25thJuly 2-3.p.m, Port Talbot Library 26thJuly 11-12.a.m, Sandfields Library 26thJuly 2-3.p.m, Glynneath Library 27thJuly 11-12.a.m, Cwmafan Library 27thJuly 2-3.p.m.

Cllr. Peter Rees, Cabinet Member for Education, Skills and Culture said:

“Reading is an important part of a child’s development and this challenge makes reading fun. It keeps them motivated by giving rewards for each book they complete. I am delighted that Libraries across the county borough are once again taking part in this great initiative.”

The challenge is simple! After registering with a library (if not already registered) children aged between 4 and 11 years are encouraged to read six books during the summer holidays. These could be anything from picture books to audio books.

A new generation will be introduced to Dennis, Gnasher and friends as each child will be provided with a collector’s map of Beanotown to keep a record of their reading journey. They will collectrewards along the wayincluding stickers, key rings and story lab wristbands. The aim is to encourage children to reach the end of their challenge and receive a certificate.

It’s easier than ever for library members to borrow books. Free eBooks, magazines and comics can be downloaded by anyone with a library membership card number and PIN (available from their nearest library). There are a wide range of titles available, including biographies, travel guides, latest fiction and children’s books which can be downloaded to a PC, laptop, smart phone, tablet or selected e-readers.

Sialens Ddarllen yr Haf 2018

Mae digwyddiad poblogaidd Sialens Ddarllen yr Haf yn dechrau ddydd Mercher 25 Gorffennaf 2018 yn llyfrgelloedd Castell-nedd, Cwmafan, Pontardawe, Glyn-nedd, Sandfields a Phort Talbot.

Y llynedd, anogodd y sialens – partneriaeth unigryw rhwng The Reading Agency a llyfrgelloedd cyhoeddus ledled y DU – fwy na thri chwarter miliwn o blant i fenthyca a darllen llyfrau o’u llyfrgelloedd lleol a siarad am eu ffefrynnau.

Thema sialens ddarllen eleni yw Dyfeiswyr Direidi sydd wedi’i hysbrydoli gan y teitl poblogaidd i blant – Beano – er mwyn dathlu ei ben-blwydd yn 80 oed.

Caiff y sialens ei lansio yn Llyfrgell Castell-nedd ar 25 Gorffennaf rhwng 11am a 12pm. Cynhelir y sesiynau eraill o gwmpas y fwrdeistref sirol fel a ganlyn: Llyfrgell Pontardawe 25 Gorffennaf 2pm-3pm, Llyfrgell Port Talbot 26 Gorffennaf 11am-12pm, Llyfrgell Sandfields 26 Gorffennaf 2pm-3pm, Llyfrgell Glyn-nedd 27 Gorffennaf 11am-12pm, Llyfrgell Cwmafan 27 Gorffennaf 2pm-3pm.

Meddai’r Cyng. Peter Rees, Aelod y Cabinet dros Addysg, Sgiliau a Diwylliant,

“Mae darllen yn rhan bwysig o ddatblygiad plentyn ac mae’r sialens hon yn gwneud darllen yn hwyl. Mae’n cymell y plant i barhau drwy roi gwobr am bob llyfr maent yn ei orffen. Rwyf wrth fy modd fod llyfrgelloedd ledled y fwrdeistref sirol yn cymryd rhan yn y fenter arbennig hon unwaith eto.”

Mae’r sialens yn syml! Ar ôl cofrestru gyda llyfrgell (os nad ydynt eisoes wedi cofrestru), anogir plant rhwng 4 ac 11 oed i ddarllen chwe llyfr yn ystod gwyliau’r haf. Gallai hyn gynnwys unrhyw beth o lyfrau lluniau i lyfrau llafar.

Bydd cenhedlaeth newydd yn cael ei chyflwyno i Dennis, Gnasher a’u ffrindiau gan y bydd pob plentyn yn derbyn map casglwr o Beanotown i gadw cofnod o’u taith ddarllen. Byddant yn casglu gwobrau ar hyd y ffordd, gan gynnwys sticeri, cylchoedd allweddi a bandiau arddwrn y Lab Straeon. Y nod yw annog plant i gyrraedd diwedd eu sialens pan fyddant yn derbyn tystysgrif.

Mae’n haws nag erioed i aelodau llyfrgell fenthyca llyfrau. Gall unrhyw un â rhif cerdyn aelodaeth llyfrgell a PIN (sydd ar gael o’r llyfrgell agosaf) lawrlwytho e-lyfrau, cylchgronau a chomics am ddim. Mae amrywiaeth eang o lyfrau ar gael, gan gynnwys bywgraffiadau, arweinlyfrau teithio, y ffuglen ddiweddaraf a llyfrau i blant, y gellir eu lawrlwytho i gyfrifiadur personol, gliniadur, ffôn clyfar, tabled neu e-ddarllenwyr dethol.
