PLAID TELLS UK GOVERNMENT “HANDS OFF BRAND WALES” AFTER REBRANDING WELSH FOOD AS BRITISH AT THE ROYAL WELSH SHOW
Plaid Cymru has criticised the lack of Welsh branding on Welsh food at this year’s Royal Welsh Show.
YESTERDAY, RHUN AP IORWERTH, PLAID CYMRU AM FOR YNYS MÔN, highlighted the fact that Welsh branding had been replaced with British branding at the food hall at the Royal Welsh Show in Llanelwedd.
In a video posted to social media yesterday, which has since garnered almost ten thousand views, RHUN AP IORWERTH AM said,
“I’M STANDING OUTSIDE THE FOOD HALL AT THE ROYAL WELSH SHOW IN LLANELWEDD WHICH IS SHOWCASING THE VERY BEST OF WELSH FOOD BUT AT THIS ROYAL WELSH SHOW, WELSH FOOD HAS BECOME BRITISH FOOD.
“WE’VE PREVIOUSLY WARNED IN PLAID CYMRU THAT BREXIT WILL THREATEN WELSH BRANDING.
WELSH BRANDING IS IMPORTANT. IT ADDS VALUE, SHOWS WHERE THE FOOD COMES FROM, SHOWS QUALITY, PRIDE AND ECONOMIC STRENGTH, AND HIGHLIGHTS THAT THIS FOOD IS SPECIFICALLY FROM WALES.
“THIS IS THE VERY BEST OF WELSH FOOD AND WE’RE BEING TOLD THROUGHOUT THE FOOD HALL THAT THIS IS GREAT BRITISH FOOD. THIS IS GREAT WELSH FOOD AND SHOULD BE CELEBRATED AS SUCH.”
RHUN AP IORWERTH AM added,
“MY CRITICISM IS TWOFOLD. THE UK GOVERNMENT MUST STOP ITS CLEAR POLITICALLY MOTIVATED INTENTION TO REPLACE WELSH BRANDING WITH BRITISH ON EVERYTHING FROM FOOD TO TOURISM, AND THE WELSH GOVERNMENT MUST WAKE UP AND TELL THEIR WHITEHALL COUNTERPARTS THAT WHEN IT COMES TO DEVOLVED AREAS LIKE FOOD AND FARMING THEY SHOULD KEEP THEIR HANDS OFF.”
DR DAI LLOYD AM FOR SOUTH WEST WALES who also attended the Royal Welsh Show added,
“DESPITE ASSURANCES FROM MICHAEL GOVE LAST YEAR THAT BREXIT WOULD NOT IMPACT WELSH BRANDING ON FOOD, WHAT WE’VE SEEN THIS WEEK AT THE ROYAL WELSH SHOW IS A SIGN OF THINGS TO COME. NO REPRESENTATION FOR WALES, NO DISTINCT WELSH BRANDING – AND NO SIGN OF THE WELSH LANGUAGE EITHER.
OUR WELSH FOOD SHOULD BE BRANDED AS BEING WELSH NOT BRITISH.”

Mae Plaid Cymru wedi beirniadu diffyg brandio Cymreig ar fwyd o Gymru yn y Sioe Fawr eleni.
Ddoe, tynnodd Rhun ap Iorwerth AC Plaid Cymru dros Ynys Môn sylw at y ffaith fod brandio Cymreig wedi cael ei ddisodli gan frandio Prydeinig yn y neuadd fwyd yn Sioe Frenhinol Cymru yn Llanelwedd.
Mewn fideo a rannwyd ar y cyfryngau cymdeithasol ddoe, sydd bellach wedi ei wylio bron i ddeg mil o weithiau, meddai RHUN AP IORWERTH AC,
“RWY’N SEFYLL TU ALLAN I’R NEUADD FWYD YN SIOE FRENHINOL LLANELWEDD SY’N DANGOS Y BWYD GORAU O GYMRU. OND YN Y SIOE FRENHINOL HON, MAE BWYD CYMRU WEDI TROI’N FWYD PRYDEINIG.
