Pembrokeshire for Europe Launch in Narberth

SUCCESSFUL LAUNCH OF PEMBROKESHIRE PRO-EU CAMPAIGN

 Pembrokeshire for Europe was launched on 27 July at Bloomfield House, Narberth when over 30 people attended the meeting addressed by Geraint Talfan Davies OBE, Chair of Wales for Europe.

In his address, Mr Davies told his audience they were not like Japanese soldiers left behind in the jungle while the world moved on.  “The Brexit battle is still on”, he said.  He observed that “the Prime Minister’s Chequers plan had been friendless from the start” and that it was now “unravelling”.

He said there was a growing demand for a People’s Vote to be held once negotiations with the EU are concluded. But before that could happen pressure would have to be brought on every single MP to cast their vote in Parliament in the national interest not party interest. This would be the priority aim for the campaign in the coming months.

Many of those present emphasised the benefits of the European Union as a family of democratic sovereign nations working together to promote international peace, human rights, high environmental standards and international trade.

The meeting discussed the importance of the Irish ferries at Fishguard and Pembroke Dock and how these have led to European investment in the county, thereby improving links both to Ireland the rest of Wales and the UK.

Those present agreed on the need for our farmers and other businesses to be able to continue to benefit from membership of the EU Internal Market.  The meeting also recognised the importance of freedom of movement to allow our health service to recruit doctors and other clinical staff.

Many felt that there had been a failure to publicise the benefits of EU membership and that Pembrokeshire for Europe should highlight local projects which have received European funding.  Everyone should be made aware that Wales receives more from the EU than we pay in.

The meeting agreed to set up a steering group and to campaign on the benefits of EU membership through press releases, social media, street stalls and public meetings.

The key decisions on EU membership will be taken by Parliament this Autumn.  It is therefore important to open a dialogue with our two MPs and to assist them with information about the long -term benefits to Pembrokeshire of continued EU membership.
