Brace up for Brexit!  Farmers in Wales urged to attend Farming Connect’s ‘Farming for the future’ roadshow events to help them prepare for the future

Businesses throughout Wales are being urged to ‘brace up for Brexit’ by tapping into all the support, guidance and funding available to help them achieve optimum performance levels as the industry prepares for the uncertain economic trading conditions expected as Britain plans to leave the EU.

Farming Connect’s ‘Farming for the Future’ roadshow events have attracted more than 5,000 attendees since the first one was held in early 2017, inspiring many Welsh farmers to plan ahead and take the necessary steps now which will help prepare their businesses for the challenges and opportunities which lie ahead.

Attending one of these events is also a mandatory requirement for eligible partners in farm businesses wanting to apply for the Welsh Government’s Farm Business Grant* (FBG) investment scheme. The fifth application window will open from 6 August to 5 October 2018.

Eirwen Williams, director of rural programmes with Menter a Busnes, which delivers Farming Connect on behalf of the Welsh Government,emphasised the need for the industry to prepare their businesses for a future post-Brexit, saying that the support mechanisms are already in place.

“The support available in Wales puts us ahead of many competitor countries, and at the final ‘Farming for the Future’ roadshows in Conwy and Carmarthenshire, we’ll be ensuring that delegates are aware of just how important it is to tap into the one-to-one support, guidance and training available through Farming Connect that can help them improve on-farm efficiencies and increase profit levels.

“As we face the uncertainties of Brexit, there has never been a more important time to ensure your business is performing at optimum levels so that you have a resilient and sustainable business model and are well prepared to face the future,” said Mrs. Williams.

Presentations at both events will focus on sustainable business development in order to improve economic and environmental performance. High on the agenda will be the importance of strategic business planning and the role of benchmarking, which is already helping transform business performance within some of Wales’ top performing farm businesses.

In addition to presentations on personal, business and technical development from well-known rural figures including Wendy Jenkins, an agricultural consultant with specialist farm business consultancy CARA Wales, the Conwy event will feature a presentation from Paul Williams from Cae Haidd in Llanrwst. Farming Connect demonstration network farmer Mr Williams will explain how he’s been able to improve outputs on his farm to secure a financially viable business thanks to support from Farming Connect’s Advisory Service.

Approved Farming Connect mentor Ben Anthony, who farms near Whitland, will address the Llanelli event, explaining how by basing all business decisions on performance and profitability, he and his partner have successfully reduced cow numbers to expand a high-output sheep enterprise at their family business.

*Eligibility for the FBG, which can provide a one-off grant of between £3,000 and £12,000, requires a partner in the business to attend one ‘Farming for the Future’ event organised by Farming Connect. The individual attending must be registered as a business partner with Farming Connect and Rural Payments Wales. Farmers throughout Wales will be able to invest in almost 90 items linked to animal health; genetics and performance; crop management; energy efficiency; resource efficiency and ICT.

Mae busnesau drwy Gymru’n cael eu hannog i ‘fod yn barod ar gyfer Brexit’ trwy fanteisio ar yr holl gymorth, arweiniad a chyllid sydd ar gael i’w helpu i sicrhau’r lefelau perfformiad gorau posibl wrth i’r diwydiant baratoi ar gyfer yr amodau masnachu economaidd ansicr a ddisgwylir wrth i Brydain gynllunio i adael yr UE.

Mae sioeau teithiol ‘Ffermio ar gyfer y dyfodol’ Cyswllt Ffermio wedi denu mwy na 5,000 o ffermwyr ers y cyntaf un a gynhaliwyd ar ddechrau 2017, gan ysbrydoli nifer o ffermwyr Cymru i flaengynllunio a chymryd y camau angenrheidiol nawr fydd yn helpu i baratoi eu busnesau ar gyfer yr heriau a’r cyfleoedd sydd o’n blaenau.

Mae mynychu un o’r digwyddiadau hyn yn ofyniad mandadol i bartneriaid cymwys mewn busnesau ffermio sydd eisiau gwneud cais am gynllun buddsoddi Grant Busnes i Ffermydd (FBG)* Llywodraeth Cymru. Bydd y pumed cyfle ymgeisio o 6 Awst i 5 Hydref 2018.

Pwysleisiodd Eirwen Williams, cyfarwyddwr rhaglenni gwledig gyda Menter a Busnes, sy’n darparu Cyswllt Ffermio ar ran Llywodraeth Cymru,yr angen i’r diwydiant baratoi eu busnesau ar gyfer dyfodol ar ôl Brexit, gan ddweud bod y mecanweithiau cymorth eisoes yn eu lle.

“Mae’r gefnogaeth sydd ar gael yng Nghymru’n ein gosod o flaen nifer o wledydd eraill sy’n cystadlu yn ein herbyn, ac yn y sioeau teithiol ‘Ffermio ar gyfer y Dyfodol’ olaf yng Nghonwy a Sir Gaerfyrddin, byddwn yn sicrhau bod cynrychiolwyr yn ymwybodol pa mor bwysig yw manteisio ar y cymorth, arweiniad a chyllid un-i-un sydd ar gael drwy raglen Cyswllt Ffermio sy’n gallu eu helpu i wella effeithlonrwydd ar y fferm a chynyddu lefelau elw.

“Wrth i ni wynebu ansicrwydd Brexit, ni fu erioed amser mor bwysig i sicrhau bod eich busnes yn perfformio ar y lefelau gorau posibl fel bod gennych fodel busnes cadarn a chynaliadwy a’ch bod wedi paratoi’n dda i wynebu’r dyfodol,” meddai Mrs. Williams.

Bydd y cyflwyniadau yn y ddau ddigwyddiad yn canolbwyntio ar ddatblygu busnes cynaliadwy er mwyn gwella perfformiad economaidd ac amgylcheddol. Ar frig yr agenda fydd pwysigrwydd cynllunio busnes strategol a rôl meincnodi, sydd eisoes yn helpu i drawsnewid perfformiad busnes yn rhai o fusnesau fferm gorau Cymru.

Yn ogystal â chyflwyniadau ar ddatblygiad personol, busnes a thechnegol gan unigolion adnabyddus o gefn gwlad yn cynnwys Wendy Jenkins, ymgynghorydd amaethyddol  gydag ymgynghoriaeth busnes fferm arbenigol CARA Wales, yn y digwyddiad yng Nghonwy bydd cyflwyniad gan Paul Williams o Gae Haidd yn Llanrwst. Bydd Mr Williams, sy’n ffermwr yn rhwydwaith arddangos Cyswllt Ffermio, yn egluro sut mae wedi gallu gwella allbynnau ar ei fferm i sicrhau busnes ariannol hyfyw, diolch i gefnogaeth gan Wasanaeth Cynghori Cyswllt Ffermio.
