Burry Port RNLI open day and Burry Port Raft Race, will be held this Saturday, August 11 at Burry Port Harbour.

The raft race, organised by Burry Port couple Craig and Isabel Goodman, is to raise much needed funds for both Burry Port RNLI and a children’s football academy the couple run in The Gambia.

The family friendly day kicks off at 2pm with the RNLI open day, with the opportunity to view the RNLI boats at the existing boathouse, learn about water safety and meet the crew, as well as the opportunity to purchase homemade cakes and refreshments.

The afternoon also includes freshly made pizzas, plus a hog roast and ice-creams. The Scarlets mascot – Cochyn will also be in attendance, and there’ll be a selection of children’s inflatables and face painting too.

There’ll also be stands from the raft race sponsors.

From 5pm, the build up starts to the raft race, with all the rafts tentatively making their way into the water, ready for the starting hooter at 6pm.

Isabel said: “Everyone is welcome to come down to the harbour and cheer on the teams. There’s lots going on for all the family from 2pm.”

Our raft teams are: 1. The Gin Sinkers, 2. Message in a Bottle, 3. The Riff Raft, 4. Team Harbour View, 5. Shoreline Aqua-holics, 6. Safe as Houses, 7. Co-op Fairtrade Banana Boat, 8. Silver Surfer, 9. Bouys and Gulls in the Hood, 10. LBS Wing & a Prayer, 11. Cefn Sidan Rotary Club, 12. Team Pye and team 13. The Plum Quad.

Craig added: “Once again we’d like to say a huge thank you to overall sponsor Dawons, and all our sponsors – Burns Pet Nutrition, The Marine Group – Burry Port Marina, Barberry Construction Services Ltd, Llanelli Star, Celtic Couriers, Burry Port Co-op, Parker Plant Hire, LBS Builders Merchants and Burry Port Town Council; without whose support, this event could not have taken place.”

Chris Hope, from overall sponsor’s Dawsons, said:  “Dawsons and our Llanelli branch are looking forward to supporting and taking part in this, our second Burry Port raft race, and hope to continue to do so for many years to come, as it is a great community event which will only grow year on year.  Our rafters are busy building together as we speak and have great confidence we will come away with an award, my only hope is it is not the wooden spoon.”
