A LAMPETER woman has launched a real nappy library so that mums and dads can try before they buy!

Fiona Bowden from Cwmann near Lampeter is helping to spread the word on the benefits of using real cloth nappies.

The nappy library gives parents the chance to try real nappies for themselves and see how easy they really are. It means they can find out which type best suits them before they decide to buy.

Fiona, aged 39, used real nappies on all of her six children and decided to set up the nappy library to try and encourage other parents to give them a go.

She said: “They are easy to use, people think of the old Terry squares, but there’s no folding or safety pins. We offer advice and support and we are also available to give demonstrations. The library is non-profit-making; all we ask is for a small deposit for loaning the nappies which is refunded when they are returned undamaged. All funds are used to purchase more stock.”

This week (April 15-21) is Real Nappy Week so what better time to ditch the disposables and give real nappies a go.

The council’s waste and recycling section promotes the use of real nappies as they are better for the environment and can save parents money too – up to £500 or more if used on subsequent children.

Council waste minimisation/recycling officer Karen Fulham said: “More and more parents are discovering the benefits of real nappies. We think the nappy library is an excellent idea and hopefully it will encourage more parents to give them a try and realise how easy they are to use.”

The council has teamed up with Lampeter Nappy Library to hold a Real Nappy Day at Llanybydder Family Centre on Thursday, April 18 from 10am-2pm. There will be lots of different types of real nappies for you to try as well baby carriers / slings.

Local real nappy companies Bum Deal Nappies and Nappy Go Lucky will also be at Merlin’s Walk, Carmarthen on Saturday, April 20 between 11am-3pm to raise awareness of real nappies along with the council’s real nappy advisor.

The council holds real nappy drop-in surgeries in Carmarthen, Ammanford and Llanelli every month and offers free real nappy trial packs.
