Dairy and livestock farmers can learn how to improve the management of their soils at a two-day Farming Connect workshop dedicated to soil management and fertiliser usage in Carmarthenshire next month.

Better soil management can improve farm productivity by increasing forage production and, with this in mind, Farming Connect is running a workshop at Gelli Aur, near Llandeilio, in October.

Master Soils follows two very successful Master Grass courses run by Farming Connect earlier this year.

Designed for dairy, beef and sheep farmers, Master Soils aims to give participants an understanding of soil fertility, soil types and structure and will examine ways that they can reduce their fertiliser usage.

Experts will be on hand to give guidance on completing a field assessment on soil qualities.

The principles of nitrogen, phosphate and potash applications and nutrient management planning will be discussed together with the role of secondary nutrients.

The course, which will be led by independent grassland and soil specialists, Charlie Morgan and Chris Duller, will be held on October 1st and 2nd and will run between 9.30am and 4.30pm. Overnight accommodation is available.

Applicants have until September 26th to submit their application form, which can be found by visiting https://businesswales.gov.wales/farmingconnect/wales-master-soils-application-form.
