Tour of Britain’s legacy and economic boost

THE long-term benefits of Carmarthenshire’s welcome of the Tour of Britain have already started to emerge, with early estimates showing the county pocketed an economic boost of around £800,000 during the weekend of the prestigious event.

That means almost a quarter of the expected economic boost of £4million for south Wales over the course of 12 months has already been achieved.

The independently produced STEAM figures paint a positive picture of the impact the event has had, and will continue to have, on the county’s economy and also the council’s ambition for Carmarthenshire to become the Cycling Hub of Wales.

Live televised coverage and post-race highlights, as well as record social media engagement and national media coverage, shone a spotlight on Carmarthenshire as a world-class visitor destination and host of major sporting events.

Meetings are now taking place to build on the success and bring more elite events to the area in the future.

Leader of the council, Cllr Emlyn Dole, said: “We hope to be feeling the benefits of the Tour of Britain for years to come, and it is so encouraging to hear that it has already put around £800,000 into the pockets of local people and businesses.

“When you consider this was achieved in one 48-hour period, and compare it to the 12-month projection of £4million for the whole of south Wales, we can start to see a clear picture of the positive impact this will have on Carmarthenshire.

“But, as was mentioned in Council, this is more than just a bike ride – this has left a legacy for Carmarthenshire in more ways than one.

“We have proven ourselves as a world-class venue for major events, shown Carmarthenshire’s breath-taking landscape and scenery to millions of people, galvanised community spirit in an unprecedented way, and inspired thousands of people to enjoy an active lifestyle in our great outdoors – it’s difficult to put a measure on that, but we can confidently say that we have achieved something special.”

MAE buddion hirdymor croesawu Taith Prydain i Sir Gaerfyrddin eisoes wedi dechrau dod i’r amlwg wrth i amcangyfrifon cynnar ddangos fod y sir wedi cael hwb economaidd o tua £800,000 yn ystod penwythnos y digwyddiad mawreddog.

Golyga hyn fod bron i chwarter o’r hwb economaidd o £4 miliwn a ddisgwyliwyd ar gyfer de Cymru dros gyfnod o 12 mis eisoes wedi’i sicrhau.

Mae’r ffigurau STEAM a gynhyrchir yn annibynnol yn rhoi darlun cadarnhaol o’r effaith y mae’r digwyddiad wedi’i chael, ac y bydd yn parhau i’w chael, ar economi’r sir a hefyd uchelgais y Cyngor i Sir Gaerfyrddin ddod yn ganolbwynt beicio Cymru.

Llwyddodd y darllediadau byw ac uchafbwyntiau ar ôl y ras ar y teledu, yn ogystal ag ymgysylltu mwy nag erioed ar y cyfryngau cymdeithasol a sylw yn y cyfryngau cenedlaethol, i dynnu sylw at Sir Gaerfyrddin fel lle i gynnal llu o ddigwyddiadau chwaraeon mawr a chyrchfan o’r radd flaenaf i ymwelwyr.

Cynhelir cyfarfodydd bellach i adeiladu ar y llwyddiant a dod â mwy o ddigwyddiadau elît i’r ardal yn y dyfodol.

Dywedodd y Cynghorydd Emlyn Dole, Arweinydd y Cyngor:  “Rydym yn gobeithio y byddwn yn profi buddion Taith Prydain am flynyddoedd i ddod, ac mae’n galonogol iawn clywed ei bod eisoes wedi rhoi tua £800,000 ym mhocedi busnesau a phobl leol.

“Pan fyddwch yn ystyried bod hyn wedi’i gyflawni mewn un cyfnod o 48 awr, ac yn ei gymharu â’r amcanestyniad 12 mis o £4 miliwn ar gyfer de Cymru gyfan, gallwn ddechrau gweld darlun clir o’r effaith gadarnhaol y bydd hyn yn ei chael ar Sir Gaerfyrddin.

“Ond, fel y dywedwyd yng nghyfarfod y Cyngor, mae hyn yn fwy na dim ond taith feicio – mae wedi gadael gwaddol ar gyfer Sir Gaerfyrddin mewn mwy nag un ffordd.

“Rydym wedi profi bod gennym leoliad o’r radd flaenaf ar gyfer digwyddiadau mawr, wedi dangos tirwedd a golygfeydd godidog Sir Gaerfyrddin i filiynau o bobl, wedi symbylu’r ysbryd cymunedol mewn ffordd na welwyd ei thebyg o’r blaen, ac wedi ysbrydoli miloedd o bobl i fwynhau ffordd egnïol o fyw yn yr awyr agored – mae’n anodd mesur hynny, ond gallwn ddweud yn hyderus ein bod wedi cyflawni rhywbeth arbennig.”
