GMB REAFFIRMS COMMITMENT TO A REFORMED ELECTORAL COLLEGE FOR WELSH LABOUR LEADER

REFORMED ELECTORAL COLLEGE RECOGNISES UNIQUE ROLE OF TRADE UNIONS IN THE LABOUR MOVEMENT

As Britain’s General Union, GMB believes that the best way to maintain the special relationship between the Trade Unions and the Welsh Labour Party is the adoption of a reformed electoral college which recognises the unique and important role that Trade Unions play in the Party and across the labour movement.

“In the week of TUC Congress celebrates 150 years of our existence, Welsh Labour members will tomorrow debate loosening the ties between the trade Unions and the Party that we founded.

“GMB along with our sister unions UNISON, USDAW, CWU, ASLEF and Community are united and will be voting to retain our special relationship that has led to the Labour and Trade Union movement achieving unprecedented Social, economic and technological changes for over a century.

“We are at a crossroads. If Party members decide that the way forward is to loosen the ties with the Trade Unions, then our relationship that has led to so much progress for over 100 years will almost certainly change in the long term.”
