Jail for man who dealt heroin from the street outside his home

A man who dealt heroin from the street outside his house in Rhydyfelin has been jailed.

Rhys Morgan, 41, of Dyffryn Gardens, was convicted of possessing heroin with intent to supply and was sentenced to 4 years in prison at Newport Crown Court today (17 September, 2018).

He was arrested on 11^th September, 2017, after being stopped and searched by plain clothes officers just a few steps from his home.

The officers watched as Rhys Morgan walked out of his house and stood alone in the street. After a short time another man walked over to him and they shook hands. The officers believed it was a drug deal and moved in.

Morgan was caught carrying wraps of heroin, £315 in cash and three mobile phones so was arrested at the scene. Another plastic bag of heroin was found concealed in his underwear after he was searched at a police station.

Scales, a fake-money detector, bottles of methadone and heroin worth more that £3,000 was seized shortly after during a search of his home.

An examination of his phone attributed lots of messages to drug deals – code words were used by Rhys Morgan and his customers in a bid to mask their illegal transactions.

Rhys Morgan was found guilty at Newport Crown Court following a trail earlier this year.

Detective Sergeant Tim Jones, said: “Rhys Morgan was dealing a significant amount of heroin to people in and around Rhydyfelin and the misery that he inflicted cannot be underestimated. Heroin destroys lives and families and it has a devastating impact on communities – those who fuel that must be punished. Rhys Morgan will now have plenty of time in prison to reflect on his choices. I would like to provide assurances to the public that we will be looking to seize any of his ill-gotten gains under the Proceeds of Crime Act.”
