Welsh Government’s ‘remarkable inconsistency’ as pheasant shoots on NRW land to end

Shadow Environment Secretary, Andrew RT Davies, has hit out at the Welsh Government’s ‘remarkable inconsistency’ after Natural Resources Wales decided to ban pheasant shooting on its land.

NRW’s acting chair Dr Madeleine Havard said the subject had provoked a huge public response but that the Welsh Government, which owns the land, had “given a clear steer” on the direction it wanted NRW to take.

Mr Davies has criticised the Cabinet Secretary and Welsh Government for inconsistency and hypocrisy given its failure to intervene on the Barry incinerator and nuclear mud dumping in Penarth.

He said:

“Irrespective of your views on country sports, it is quite remarkable that Labour ministers – against both science and the evidence on the table – have chosen to intervene in this way.

“We must not forget this is the same minister who has repeatedly failed to take action to stop the Barry incinerator or nuclear mud dumping in Penarth and people will rightly ask why.

“In making this decision it has been proved this influence and power is available, so it leads to questions as to why both NRW and the Welsh Government are prepared to get involved here, but are not interested in intervening elsewhere.”
