Here’s the first article in our new column by Laura Lake!

Dear Laura

I have a fear of flying and would love to travel to the USA. It’s never going to go away but I would still like to go on holiday.

However, how do I get to the USA without going by plane?

Thanks

Afraid of Flying

Dear Afraid of Flying

If flying isn’t for you, travelling to the USA or pretty much any part of the world these days is possible on board a cruise ship. Over the past 15 years, this way of travelling has become increasingly popular with a number of cruise lines now available on the market the choices are endless.

If you would like to visit the USA in particular, you can take a cruise which incorporates many US ports, or for a longer stay on land take a ‘transatlantic’ crossing straight into New York City. A ‘transatlantic’ crossing will take around 7 days and bring you straight into New York City.

The cost of a cruise will include food and on board entertainment and priced per day can work out very good value for money.

Back in the day of the ‘Ten Pound Pom’ Brits could travel to Australia on a cruise ship for £10, these days cruises are slightly more expensive but with accommodation, food and entertainment included in the price they do work out very good value for money.

If you are unsure of a long cruise, why not try a 2 or 3 night cruise first, to test the water, so to speak!

Most cruises depart the UK from Southampton, Harwich, Liverpool and Dover and sea legs are recommended!
