In a statement Plaid Cymru Llanelli have accused Labour of following in David Cameron’s footsteps in relation to their recent announcement on welfare changes stating that:
‘The so-called ‘Iron discipline’ on welfare that is being proposed by Labour clearly shows they offer no credible alternative to the Tories austerity agenda. Yet again, it’s just more of the same.’
Sean Rees, Plaid Llanelli Press Officer said:
“The announcement by Labour shows they cannot be trusted to change the fortunes of our weak and fragile economy. It is disappointing to see that the Labour Party actually support most of the cuts being imposed by the Tories. For instance refusing to reverse the Tories child benefit cuts and disability reforms as well as the unjust and unworkable ‘Bedroom Tax’.
We in Plaid truly recognise the devastating impact these toxic policies are having on our communities, for instance 828 households in Llanelli alone are adversely affected by the ‘Bedroom Tax’.”
“The proposal by Labour if elected to also cut the Winter Fuel Allowance will affect 600,000 people, many of whom are pensioners who rely so heavily on this subsidy to heat their homes and keep warm.
This policy will plunge even more local residents to live below the poverty line. Plaid’s focus will remain on rebuilding our economy in order to build a stronger and more equal nation by providing social services that will meet the needs of all our people.”
Plaid Cymru Mid and West AM Simon Thomas added:
“Llanelli’s MP and AM have to decide whether they support Ed Balls in removing benefits from pensioners or do they agree with Plaid Cymru to keep these universal benefits.
“The People of Llanelli will want to know where they stand.
“The Labour party in keeping to Conservative spending plans have betrayed the trust of those many people locally who desperately need a real alternative to austerity.
“Plaid Cymru is the party they can come home to.”
