Tenants in Carmarthenshire with homes in poor state could receive a welcome boost, thanks to a new agreement between the UK and Welsh Labour Government ministers.

In total 11 Welsh councils could save £33m a year towards their housing budgets meaning more money will be available to invest in homes. Previously, councils had to pay around £73m a year income from rents to the Treasury.

The deal means Carmarthenshire County Council will now be able to use that rental income to improve homes in a poor state and invest in new housing.

Keith Davies said: “This is fantastic news for local authorities after a lot of hard work from Welsh Labour Ministers. The focus must now be on making sure that money is used effectively improving existing stock and being ambitious in building new.

“Once again, the Welsh Labour Government is standing up for the people of Wales and making sure housing standards improve across authorities.”

Welsh Labour’s Minister for Housing and Regeneration, Carl Sargeant said: “This is an historic agreement which will have a direct impact upon the Welsh stock retention authorities and their current and future tenants.”

The Welsh Government will continue to work closely with HM Treasury, local authorities and the Welsh Local Government Association to implement the reform.
