Mid and West AM Simon Thomas has stepped up the pressure on the Football Association of Wales over their decision to demote AFC Llanelli.

He asked the Sports Minister in the Senedd to intervene in the affair.

Plaid Cymru AM Simon Thomas said: “I’m calling for a U-turn from the FAW about their treatment of Llanelli AFC. No one would criticise them if they overturned their original decision. Particularly because the clubs involved are community hubs which uphold their own strategic plan for Welsh football.

“The Minister acknowledged these are important matters for clubs, areas and supporters involved particularly after his experience as a supporter of Newport County.

“I’m pleased thanks to pressure on the footballing body the FAW are in talks with the supporters groups about the way forward. Plaid Cymru believes the Welsh Government should do everything they can to save Llanelli AFC.”

One supporter of AFC Llanelli, Sean Rees added: “I’m pleased Simon Thomas AM has raised this important issue in the chamber. The FAW must now respond and truly recognise supporters concerns as well as the achievements and history of Llanelli AFC. It is paramount that the Reds are saved in order that the future of football is protected in the Town.”
