Petition to save Prince Philip in front of the National Assembly for Wales

A debate on the floor of the National Assembly for Wales about the maintenance of services at Prince Philip Hospital in Llanelli is now a step closer. Following a meeting of the Petitions Committee in the National Assembly, the Sosppan committee has expressed their commitment to maintaining the pressure to secure the future of Prince Philip.

A delegation of Sosppan committee representatives delivered the 13,500 response petition to the Assembly’s Petitions Committee in September, and the Petition’s Committee has this morning [13 November] formally accepted it as a matter for examination. Members of Sosppan were in Cardiff to follow proceedings.

The Petitions Committee has resolved to await the November meeting of the Hywel Dda Health Board and the full details of their hospital reorganisation plans before moving forward. They will then decide whether to trigger a debate in plenary, inviting representations from all Assembly Members, and a response from the Cabinet Secretary for Health.

Louvain Roberts, Chair of Sosppan said:

“I feel this is a step in the right direction for Sosppan and the campaign to save Prince Philip Hospital. We will continue to follow developments, and will work with the petitions committee to ensure our voice is heard. Sosppan is continuing the fight for a future for Prince Phillip Hospital.

“I’d like to thank all members of the Committee, and especially Mike Hedges AM for accepting our petition.”

Local Assembly Member Lee Waters said:

“We won an important victory on the future of Prince Philip Hospital, but it’s important that we remain vigilant. By getting the Assembly’s petitions committee to keep an eye on what happens Sosppan have put an important marker down. So when the Health Board make their final decision on their hospital plans we’ll have the opportunity to have it fully debated by the Assembly”
