A LLANELLI secondary school is celebrating after being awarded the Green Flag for their work to help the environment.
Coedcae School has achieved the coveted Green Flag as part of the Eco Schools Programme.
The Green Flag is only awarded to schools which have demonstrated a real commitment to tackling climate change.
Staff and pupils have been working hard to reduce their carbon footprint and become as environmentally-friendly as possible.
An eco-committee and eco-club was set up, pupils have carried out litter-picks and taken part in recycling workshops; an eco day was held and the pupils are currently working on a project to build their own greenhouse from plastic bottles.
They have also designed a ‘thank you’ card for council recycling advisors who have been carrying out a participation monitoring and door-knocking exercise in the area.
Executive Board Member for Sustainability Cllr Pam Palmer said: “I am delighted to hear that Coedcae School has been awarded a Green Flag. The award reflects all their hard work and I would like to congratulate both staff and pupils for their efforts.”
An official ‘flag-raising’ ceremony will be held in the new academic year.
Eco Schools is a partnership between the council, Keep Wales Tidy and the National Botanic Garden of Wales, pupils study topics including litter, biodiversity, water, energy, waste, transport, healthy living and global citizenship.
