Smoking in Taxi

A CARMARTHEN taxi driver has been issued with a fixed penalty notice for smoking in his cab.

An environmental enforcement officer saw the driver light a cigarette outside his vehicle parked at Carmarthen Railway Station last week. The driver then got into his cab and drove away still smoking.

The officer reported it to the council’s Public Protection Division, which issued a fixed penalty notice for £50, however if paid within the first 15 days of the notice being served, this is discounted to £30.

Executive board member for environmental and public protection Cllr Jim Jones said: “Smoke free places include vehicles used for work and they must be kept smoke free. This is especially important in taxis and private hire vehicles, where children could be exposed to smoke residues.

“This driver has had an expensive reminder not to smoke in his taxi and I hope any other drivers tempted to smoke in their vehicles will take the message to heart too. The council will take action to safeguard public health.”
