THE council has been thanked by the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge for the real nappy trial pack it sent on the birth of Prince George.
The council’s waste and recycling team put together the special pack for the Royal prince to try and raise awareness on the benefits of real nappies.
Not only are they better for the environment and for baby, but they can save parents money compared to disposable nappies.
The council received a letter from the private secretary to Her Royal Highness the Duchess of Cambridge which read: “The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have asked me to write and thank you so much for the real nappy covers and liners, which you so kindly sent on the occasion of the birth of their son, Prince George.
“Their Royal Highnesses have been overwhelmed by all the wonderful messages and gifts they have received and the Royal couple, their parents and families are so thrilled at this special time.
“The Duke and Duchess would have me send you their warmest thanks and best wishes.”
Figures show that an estimated 200 million disposables are thrown away in Wales each year – that’s 38,000 tonnes of unnecessary waste going to landfill.
Using real nappies instead of disposables can cut your black bag waste in half and also save you up to £500 or more if used on subsequent children.
They also come in all kinds of designs and colours; with fabric fasteners or poppers and can be washed along with your baby’s clothes.
Executive Board Member for Technical Services Cllr Colin Evans said: “More and more parents are discovering the benefits of real nappies. We are trying to encourage more parents to give them a go instead of using disposables which end up in landfill and is bad for the environment.”
