BURRY Port town centre is missing out on a pot of money available for a make-over of business premises.

Funding has been targeted at Stepney Road and Station Road in Burry Port to help make an impact on the environment. But some businesses have been shunning the opportunity.

Carmarthenshire council regeneration team are now worried that the town will lose out on a chance of sprucing up the town in the same manner that Llanelli has.

The grant has been advertised previously but despite receiving numerous enquires and applications, only two projects are progressing. The two projects currently ongoing are The George and Reflections of 8 Stepney Street.

County executive board member for regeneration Cllr Meryl Gravell said it would he hugely disappointing if businesses did not take the chance to upgrade their own properties and the town generally while this window of opportunity presented itself.

The TIG’s enable eligible businesses to carry out major improvements giving their property frontages a face lift with grants available of up to £15,000 or 75per cent of the total eligible cost, depending which is the least.

Eligible projects are those that improve their frontage where they would also be either safeguard existing jobs; employ under 10 people and have a turnover of less than £1.36 million or enhance the appearance of the local area.

Ineligible works are those that involve routine repair and maintenance works; works relating to health and safety requirements; any statutory works and works that will not make a significant contribution to the general environmental enhancement of the area including works to elevations of a property not seen by the public.

Projects will be assessed on the number of jobs safeguarded, number of buildings improved; being value for money and then number of adjacent properties applying for grant.

Property owners wishing to take advantage of the funds available are urged to contact county physical regeneration officer Simon Rees on 01554 748825 for further details.
