Cardiff couple sentenced for explosives offences

Two people from Cardiff have appeared at the Central Criminal Court at the Old Bailey today (Friday 21^st December) after pleading guilty to explosives offences.

Edward Harris, 27, from Ely in Cardiff was sentenced to five years in prison for two counts of possession of explosives, two counts of manufacture and four counts of possession of  a document containing information useful to terrorism contrary to section 58 of the Terrorism Act 2000.

A second person, 51 year-old Natalie Parsons was sentenced to two years in prison for two counts of possession of explosives.

They were arrested following a joint operation by the Wales Extremism and Counter Terrorism Unit (WECTU) assisted by South Wales Police following reports of explosive materials being held at an address in Ely, Cardiff.

A search warrant was executed on 29^th August after information was received that the occupants were preparing explosives at their home address. Officers found commercial chemicals and other material at the property which were being used in the production of home-made explosives.

Harris’ digital devices were seized and later examined. Detectives found copies of terrorist-related manuals and documents detailing how to make and create home-made explosives.

Detective Superintendent Jim Hall, Head of WECTU, said: 

“The actions of both Harris and Parsons put both themselves, their neighbours and the public in great danger.

“This was a joint investigation between WECTU and South Wales Police. The excellent work has led to a number of dangerous components and weapons being taken out of circulation.

“The case is also a further reminder of the need to be ever-vigilant and I urge anyone who sees any suspicious activity or behaviour to ACT and report it to police.”
