Twinning and Daffodils

Everybody knows that daffodils are the national flower of Wales, so the Llanelli and District Twinning Association naturally chose growing daffodils as part of the activities to mark the 30th Anniversary between Llanelli and its twin town of Agen, in South West France.

Young people in both towns have planted the bulbs and eagerly await the blooms that normally appear in time for St David’s day on March 1st.

The Chair of the Llanelli and District Twinning Association, Paolo Piana visited the local Llanelli Brownies group recently to drop off a bag of bulbs. These have now been planted, and the Brownies will be tending them over the coming months. Paolo was in Agen on holiday at the end of November and took the opportunity to take the bulbs to the Paul Dangla college, where a class of 11 and 12 year olds will be growing the bulbs.

Paolo told the West Wales Chronicle. “I visited the college with members of the Agen twinning committee, expecting to give the bulbs to the young people, but to my surprise when I arrived there were a variety of gardening tools waiting for us!  We had great fun with the young people planting them in front of the school. We created a large 3 and 0  for the 30th anniversary as well as a heart shape.”

Both groups will now keep in touch with other and report their progress. As the weather in Agen tends to be a little warmer than Llanelli we might see their bulbs flowering first.

This little project is one of a number of community-led activities to celebrate 30 years of twinning and friendship. Craft groups in both towns are working to produce a piece of work that they can exchange next year and there are other events planned too.

The Twinning Association is keen to hear ideas and welcome new members to join.
