These walks are open to everyone and not restricted to members of particular societies.

Sun 13th Oct.

UK Fungus Day at the National Botanic Garden of Wales, (SN519 177). A series of interesting events, including walks and talks, have been arranged with the first walk starting at 10.30 am and the last will finish by 16.30.

Walks will be led by several eminent mycologists including David Mitchell, Pat O’Reilly and Ray Woods. During the day Pat O’Reilly will give a talk, ‘Fascinated by Welsh Fungi’ and Sue Parker will talk on ‘Cooking with Wild fungi’.

Normal Garden entrance charge applies. This event has something for everyone and should be well worth attending.

Sat 19th Oct, 2pm.

Green Castle Woods (SN 392 164) on the Carmarthen to Llanstephan road. Leader Philip Jones. This is a joint Llanelli Naturalists/Wildlife Trust meeting.

Sun 20th Oct, 2pm.

Pembrey Country Park (SN402 000) — usual entry charge for cars applies. Leader Philip Jones. Meet at the visitor centre but we will probably drive to the ‘woodland car park’ to start the walk as the habitat is better for fungi.

Sun 27th Oct, 13.00.

Penboyr Church (SN353 364) — this small church is along a minor road south of Drefach / Felindre and about 4miles south east of Newcastle Emlyn. Your OS Explorer map 185 might be useful! This walk has been organised by Isabel Macho, Carmarthenshire Biodiversity Officer, and will be led by Bruce Langridge. A variety of grassland waxcap fungi have been found in the churchyard.

Sat 2nd November, 2pm.

National Botanic Garden of Wales (SN519 177). This is a Wildlife Trust meeting and Trust members get in free (as do members of the Garden) so gather outside the main entrance to the Garden. Bruce Langridge will lead the walk to look at fungi on Waun Las meadow.

5th September to 6th October

Narberth Museum, in collaboration with the West Wales Biodiversity Information Centre, is hosting an exhibition of posters and photographs of fungi in Pembrokeshire. The usual museum admission charge applies. The new museum in Narberth is well worth a visit anyway but this exhibition shows some stunning images of fungi. Their website is www.narberthmuseum.co.uk .

Pembrokeshire Fungus Recording Network is very active and has a good programme of events. David Harries produces a periodic newsletter, Pembrokeshire Fungus Recorder which can be read / downloaded from their website www.pembsfungi.org.uk .
