Burry Port RNLI’s 40th anniversary celebrations were interrupted on Saturday evening when a yacht got into difficulty.

The volunteer crew attending the black tie event at Stradey Park Hotel were just tucking into their starter when the call for help came.

RNLI crew members Rob Davies, Nick Jones, Paul Stewart, Lee Howells, Paul Williams, Susanna Morgan and Gary Morgan made a sharp exit from their dinner tables just before 9pm and made their way, donned in tuxedos and ball gowns, to the station. They were met there by RNLI volunteer Darren Caines who had been unable to attend the ball.

The station’s D-Class lifeboat Diane Hilary was launched with crew members Darren Caines, Rob Davies and Nick Jones on board. The yacht was outside of Burry Port and unable to find the inward channel to the harbour.

The crew made their way to the casualty vessel and once located they safely escorted the yacht back to Burry Port Marina with volunteer crew member Rob Davies boarding the yacht to give assistance.

Once the vessel was moored in the Marina and the D-Class lifeboat had been recovered back to the station, the volunteer crew members made their way back to the celebrations where they were greeted with a round of applause from all the guests.
