Mum of twins spots gap in the local market and launches business “Beaming Babies” to fill the void

Mum of twins, Kelly Jenkins (age 31, of Neath) spotted a gap in the local baby class market, this was when she realised that there was no provider of classes that promote a love of literacy as well as multi-sensory exploration. Along with her twins, who are now 3-years-old, Kelly attended several different baby groups and classes across south Wales but was unable to find a class that offered this unique combination. This led to the birth of ‘Beaming Babies’ which offers structured classes for babies and their carers.

Each week is based around a different children’s book which is read to the group and then brought to life with props, music, movement, structured activities and exploratory play. You can expect to see bubbles, balloons, parachutes, dancing ribbons, juggling scarfs and plenty of bright colours along with music, movement and laughter at classes.

The classes are designed to support babies cognitive, physical and social development as well as promoting a love of literature from the start which offers benefits in terms of early speech, language and communication skills. Kelly has developed the programme herself with the input of early years professionals as well as other parents, with all of the content underpinned by research and the work of influential learning theorists.

Kelly has owned all areas of the business from the development of the programme, the marketing strategy and the finances amongst all the other elements to setting up a new business. Whilst it has been a challenge to juggle along with family life, Kelly says her passion for her venture and the need for a class like this locally has been her motivation.

When developing the programme Kelly created an unique “ABC” framework for their design. A stands for ‘Activity’ which outlines what exactly baby and their carer will be doing, B stands for ‘Benefits’ which outlines why the activity is beneficial for babies and what area of development it supports and lastly, C stands for ‘Change’ which explains how activities can be slightly adapted to meet the needs of baby depending on their stage of development. The class has been well received by the local communities so far with around 500 Facebook followers and some very positive reviews.

Kelly said about the business launch: “I’m so excited to launch of Beaming Babies in South Wales. I am starting the classes in Neath and Swansea as it was important to me to share the programme with local parents and carers first. However, I have high hopes of expanding in the future through franchising my business throughout Wales and the rest of the UK.

“I’ve spent a long time researching, developing and refining the programme and it’s something that I’m extremely proud of. I’d love to see as many babies and their parents benefiting from it as possible.”

Beaming Babies classes currently take place at The Village Hotel in Swansea and Bryncoch Scouts Hall in Neath.
