132 people fined during summer clean up

A TOTAL of 132 people were fined by the council during the summer Clean up Carmarthenshire campaign.

During June, July and August 112 fixed penalty notices for £75 were issued for dropping litter, 14 for dog fouling offences, and three for fly-posting / graffiti.

Council environmental enforcement officers also issued another three fines for abandoning a vehicle, failing to produce waste documents and for having two or more vehicles advertised for sale at the roadside.

In total they investigated 576 separate incidents over the three month period and a number of these investigations are still ongoing.

The ‘Clean Up Carmarthenshire’ campaign was launched in a bid to make the county cleaner and safer.

Fly-tipping blackspots, litter strewn streets, parks and beaches and playing fields smeared with dog mess were all targeted in the summer blitz.

Officers have been patrolling across the county and residents were urged to help catch offenders by reporting any incidents as well as any problem areas so that they could be targeted.

A number of schools and community groups also carried out litter-picks to help make a difference to the area in which they live.

Executive Board Member for Environmental and Public Protection Cllr Jim Jones said: “I would like to thank residents for helping us to make Carmarthenshire a county we can be proud of.

“Officers have increased patrols and thanks to information provided by the public more people have been fined.

“Dog fouling and litter is a top priority for the council and we will continue to target problem areas and hopefully catch offenders in the act.

“If we all work together we can make Carmarthenshire a cleaner, greener and safer place to live and visit.”
