Vulnerable vehicle scheme launched in Llanelli.

Police in Llanelli have launched a scheme aimed at reminding motorists to keep their cars secure and not have valuable items on display.

In recent weeks there have been several incidents where thieves have taken advantage of valuables being left on display. In each one they have smashed a car window to remove a handbag which has been left on display.

“While this is not a major problem at the moment, we do know that there are offenders out there who will target vulnerable vehicles,” said Sergeant Justin Evans. “A vulnerable vehicle is one which may have been left unlocked, have a window open, or have valuables left on seats clearly in view such as handbag, satellite navigation equipment, phones and so on.

To try and prevent this we have the started the Vulnerable Vehicle Scheme. It allows officers the opportunity to look out for these vehicles and to leave a letter giving advice that valuables can be seen and to remind the owners of the need to lock vehicles and conceal valuables.

“In DPP we are in the business of preventing crime before anything happens and there is a lot of advice out there on what people should do to protect themselves and their property, including 101 and our website www.dyfed-powys.police.uk.

“We hope the public heed this crime prevention advice, especially in the run up to Christmas, and take steps to make sure they don’t become our next victim.”
