An attempt to steal copper piping from a disused building next to Llwynhendy’s community centre has led to a gas leak.

The theft was reported to police shortly after 11.40pm on Wednesday 9th October after a member of the public reported smelling gas in the area.

Gas engineers were able to cut off the supply before alerting officers. Due to the amount of gas which had escaped it was not safe for officers to enter last night. It’s hoped a thorough search of the premises can be made today to determine exactly what was taken.

“This was a potentially dangerous situation needlessly caused by irresponsible thieves,” said Inspector Paul Lewis. “It was dangerous not only for the thieves stealing the copper piping but also for the residents living close by.

“I appeal to anyone living in this community who knows anything about this crime to please come forward and assist us with our inquries. Officers can be contacted at Llwynhendy police station on 101.”
