Open Meeting on the potential impact of a no deal Brexit

Pembrokeshire for Europe will be holding an open meeting at the Bloomfield Centre, Narberth on 27 February at 7 pm to discuss the potential impact of a ‘no deal’ Brexit on Welsh agriculture.

Huw Thomas, Political Adviser for NFU Cymru will attend the meeting and present his views on the potential impact of a no deal Brexit.

Alistair Cameron from Pembrokeshire for Europe said:

“As we move closer to the March 29 deadline, the risk of leaving the EU without a deal is growing all the time. Europe is the biggest export market for our farmers and the impact on our agricultural communities could be devastating if we leave without a deal.

“About a third of the Welsh lamb crop is exported each year and 90% of this goes to the EU. In the event of a no deal the effective World Trade Organisation tariff would be 46% for lamb and between 48 and 84% for beef according to the cut. This will drive many farmers out of business.

“There is a very real risk that a disorderly Brexit will make us more reliant on imports from beyond the EU, produced to lower standards and many farms will struggle to survive. This could be disastrous for our domestic food supply as well as the careful management of our cherished countryside.”
