Following news that Pontarddulais fire station could close as part of a wave of fire service cuts in the area, union reps at one of the town’s largest workplaces would like to express solidarity with firefighters at the station and state our opposition to the closure.
There are 150 workers at the Tesco superstore in Pontarddulais, whose safety, along with the public who shop at the store, in the event of a fire or other emergency would be compromised by the closure. It is a further blow to the fire service in the area following the slashing of firefighter numbers at nearby Llanelli station that has already taken place.
We support the fire brigades union who have been taking action against attack on their pensions whilst also consistently highlighting the dangers of cuts being made to fire services. Usdaw reps in Pontarddulais are opposed to all cuts in fire and rescue services and we give our full backing to FBU members in the Mid and West Wales brigade in any action they may take to prevent these dangerous cuts and closures.
