OVER the next five years around £127million will be invested in schools across Carmarthenshire.
It will include a number of brand new schools and major redevelopments, built through the county council’s Modernising Education Programme.
They will be at Ffwrnes; Bro Dinefwr; Carreg Hirfaen; Burry Port; Seaside; Trimsaran; Cwm Tywi; Ammanford; Llandeilo; and Parc y Tywyn.
Funding of £56million will come from the county council, and external money, mainly from the Welsh Government, will make up the rest.
Council Leader Cllr Kevin Madge said: “Despite these difficult financial times, we are pleased to be able to continue our investment in schools through our Modernising Education Programme.
“We are grateful to the Welsh Government for their continued support which is making it possible for us to deliver so much of this programme over the next five years.
“Not only does the MEP invest in our children, it also supports the local construction industry safeguarding jobs and creating apprenticeships.”
Secondary schools are to benefit including £21.5million at Dyffryn Aman and £18.4million at Maes y Gwendraeth through the Dinefwr development.
Work has recently started on a £1million youth facility at Glan y Mor, and is ongoing for a £8.2million extension and refurbishment at Strade.
At Coedcae, £6.7million is to be spent on a science and technology extension and refurbishment of the existing building.
St John Lloyd will have a £3.2million multi extension and refurbishment project; and a £1.2million investment through plans for a Llanelli Vocational Village, which will enable students to attend a range of classes at different sites.
Other schools to benefit through the major investment include Ysgol Llys Hywel which have had ICT improvements; Dewi Sant with internal reconstruction; and Five Roads with a new mobile classroom.
Education executive board member Cllr Keith Davies said: “This is what our MEP is about – delivering first class accommodation and facilities for all children in Carmarthenshire.
“Over the next five years, thousands of children will benefit from this investment.”
