‘United We Stand’ say charities in Wales on UN Anti-Racism Day 21st March 2019

Charities from across Wales working to advance race equality will come together on Thursday the 21st of March at a conference to mark UN Day Against Racism.

The one-day conference titled ‘United We Stand’ will be held at the Pierhead building in Cardiff and will be opened by Deputy Minister and Chief Whip Jane Hutt, who has also sponsored the event.

The event is being organised by leading Welsh based charity Ethnic Minorities and Youth Support Team, and is being jointly delivered with the newly established Race Alliance Wales.

Organisations presenting include Stand up to Racism Wales, Show Racism the Red Card and Race Council Cymru, and will showcase the range of perspectives, organisations, ethnicities and community groups which make up a diverse Wales.

Delegates will also explore the specific impact of Brexit on diverse communities including religious minorities, ethnic minority women, young people and European Migrant groups, and will seek to make recommendations to Welsh Government on how to mitigate this impact.

Speaking ahead of the event, EYST Wales Chief Executive Rocio Cifuentes said:

“Following the horrific attacks in Christchurch New Zealand, the problem of racism and far right extremism is known to be growing across the globe, and Wales is not immune to this.

“We hope that this conference will reinforce the message that we are many diverse communities living in Wales, but that we are all united in our solidarity with each other, and respect and value our differences. United we stand, but divided we fall, and we have seen all too clearly the tragic consequences that divisive and damaging rhetoric can have.”

UN Day against Racism was set up in 1966, following the shooting of Anti-Apartheid protestors in South Africa in 1960. Every year has a theme, and this year’s theme is ‘Mitigating and countering rising nationalist populism and extreme supremacist ideologies’.
