Plaid Cymru Member of the European Parliament (MEP) Jill Evans recently visited the Town and was the guest speaker at Plaid Llanelli’s Christmas Party which took place at the Vista Lounge on Thursday 5th December.
At the event, Ms Evans spoke of her work representing Wales in the European Parliament and highlighted some of her key achievements as an MEP which include conducting research which shows Wales is a net beneficiary of the EU. Compared with what we pay in per year, for every person in the country, we get about £40 more back in funding.
In addition, Ms Evans voted to defend common agricultural payments to Welsh farmers and has called for Wales to be included in the European Transport Network in order for Wales to have the same access to funding as other regions of the U.K.
The U.K Government has totally ignored Wales in this aspect with even the link to Ireland going from Liverpool as opposed to Holyhead or Pembroke Dock.
In her speech to the party’s members and supporters, Jill Evans MEP said:
“2014 will be a crucial year for Wales. There will be huge change in Europe and we must ensure that Wales benefits. We have to make Europe work for Wales. There’s a lot of talk these days about reform of the European union. Plaid Cymru wants the most radical reform of all – to create a modern, successful, bilingual and democratic ‘Europe of the Peoples’. For as long as Wales’s vote in Brussels is cast by the London-based parties, Wales will lose out.
I was the only MEP out of the 4 elected for Wales who voted against the EU funding cut in order for local businesses here in Llanelli and throughout Wales to be supported and receive vital support funds.”
