A NEW service supporting older people, and those with dementia, has helped over 500 people in its first six months.
Cymorth Cartref Sir Gâr (Carmarthenshire Housing Support) was launched earlier this year by Carmarthenshire County Council’s Housing Services team.
It helps people retain their independence, providing them with practical support so they can remain living safely in their own homes and communities.
The team can also provide short-term support to people leaving hospital; help them claim benefit entitlements, or simply let them know of places they can socialise.
Les James, Housing Services Manager, said: “Staff are working with residents in the community to ensure they can live an independent life. We realise that some people may need support to do this and that is exactly what we are here to do.
“This is an expansion of our sheltered housing service to help and support residents in Carmarthenshire.”
The service is available to anyone aged 55 or over, or people with dementia regardless of age.
It is not restricted to council tenants, with private homeowners and those living in private rented accommodation eligible for support.
Cllr Tegwen Devichand, Executive Board Member for Housing, said: “We are making a real difference to people’s lives. The small things we are doing also have a big impact further down the line, relieving some of the pressure on social care services.”
