Crews on standby in case of severe weather

COUNCIL highways crews will be on standby tomorrow and over the weekend as severe weather could cause disruption across the county.

A combination of high tides, a positive surge, strong winds and large waves could lead to minor coastal flooding, particularly on Saturday.

Properties and communities in coastal locations may be affected; disruption to travel is possible as well as further damage to previously compromised flood defence infrastructure.

Sandbags have been delivered to areas affected by the New Year storms including Llangennech, Llansteffan, Laugharne, Llanddowror and Pendine.

Some remedial works have been carried out along the Llanelli and Burry Port coast and the existing flood defence boards at Pendine have been reinforced and backed by a wall of sandbags.

A temporary pump also continues to be on site at Llansteffan.

Crews will be on standby in the event of road closures at the above locations, as well as the Quayside in Carmarthen.

Householders are being reminded that sandbags are supplied on request, depending on demand and local circumstances and therefore should not be relied upon as the primary means of protection.

Executive Board Member for Technical Services Cllr Colin Evans said: “Stormy conditions can be just as disruptive as ice and snow and people should take extra care if venturing out.

“We do all we can to keep residents safe during the winter months and we will be monitoring the situation very carefully over the weekend.

“Council workers will be on standby in case of any problems and arrangements have already been made in the areas most likely to be affected. It is always difficult to predict what the weather will bring, however, rest assured we are prepared.”

In the event of extreme weather, motorists are advised to avoid any unnecessary journeys, if you do have to travel, please take extra care and adjust your driving to suit the conditions.
