What does EHIC removal mean for travel insurance?

Earlier this week it was announced that the EHIC will no longer be valid if we leave the EU with no deal. This has raised a number of questions with Britons wondering how this will affect their travel insurance. Fiona Macrae from Travel Insurance Explained has given a statement about the announcement.

“This week a number of government agencies have given advice to the public on travelling abroad, including the Department of Health and Social Security (DHSS). In a statement the DHSS said that the ‘European Health Insurance Cards (EHIC) will no longer be valid if the UK leaves the EU without a deal, and you should buy comprehensive travel insurance to cover any healthcare costs while travelling in the EU’.”

“This statement highlights the fact that travellers need to ensure that any travel insurance policy they purchase shouldn’t stipulate that the use of the EHIC is compulsory should you need to make a medical claim in the EU.  However, using the term ‘comprehensive’ is not helpful, it is a very broad term and also subjective. Travelinsuranceexplained.co.uk would always advise consumers to ensure that they are buying a travel insurance policy that is suitable for the person’s individual needs, as the policy may claim to be comprehensive but that does not mean it is comprehensive to everyone’s needs or circumstances.”

“Furthermore, the consumer should be focused on ensuring they are declaring all their medical conditions to their travel insurance provider, so if the EHIC is withdrawn, they have the cover in place should they need to make a claim for their medical conditions or anything that could be attributed to them.”
