Campaigning local Assembly Member, Lee Waters, has received the backing of the Llanelli Constituency Labour Party to fight the next Assembly election in 2021 as the party’s candidate.

Lee Waters, who has been appointed a Deputy Minister in the Welsh Government, won the Llanelli constituency against expectations in 2016. In an election which saw a 7.6% swing against the Labour Party across Wales, Waters’ energetic campaign saw a 5% swing to Labour in Llanelli to win the seat for the second consecutive election.

Mr Waters said: “I’m pleased to get the endorsement of Labour Party members across the Llanelli constituency. The reason I stood for election three years ago was to roll up my sleeves to try and make devolution work for Wales, and for the area I grew up in particular.”

“I’ve worked as hard as I can to be an honest advocate for the Llanelli constituency, speaking up for the people here, and being true to my own principles by sticking to the causes that brought me into politics.”

“I’ve led local campaigns on public transport and litter, and been proud to stand alongside other local campaigners to use the platform I’ve been given to bring about practical change.  Just before Christmas I honoured my pledge to produce an economic plan for the Llanelli constituency and was honoured days later to join the Welsh Government as the Deputy Minister for the economy and transport to try and put some of these ideas into practice”.

Nia Griffith MP commented: “Lee’s really brought some fresh ideas to the discussion about how we improve our economy and create more and better quality jobs, both here in the Llanelli Constituency and across Wales, and he will be a real boost to Welsh Government as Deputy Minister for the economy and transport. We are lucky to have someone with such drive and enthusiasm to represent Llanelli as our Assembly Member.”

Deryk Cundy, Chair of Llanelli CLP said “Lee has been a stalwart supporter of local business,  as well as looking at ways to tackle many of the social issues in the area. He’s been actively involved with initiatives as diverse as active travel, job creation, environmental protection and health and wellbeing and always brings a refreshing view. Lee brings a balanced and refreshing view to Llanelli’s opportunities for the future, and will continue to be an excellent AM for Llanelli.”
