Gorslas Church Hall Tackle Energy Price Rises

A COMMUNITY hall in Gorslas has taken action to beat rising energy bills – and keep users warmer.

Built in 1899, Gorslas Church Hall was originally used as a school and is now well used by community groups such as the Youth Club, Brownies, Mothers’ Union, Senior Citizens, the school and the church.

Following an energy efficiency survey commissioned through RDP Sir Gâr’s Zero Carbon Future (ZCF) project and carried out by Melin Energy in the summer, the Church Hall Committee applied to ZCF for funding to insulate the building’s loft.

David Winsey of the Committee said: “As a result of the insulation, our energy bills will be reduced as the hall will heat up more quickly and retain the heat for longer. We are hoping to implement other recommendations from the survey by installing solar panels once we secure funding.”

Zero Carbon Future, part of the RDP Sir Gâr Innovative Hubs project, is funded through the Rural Development Plan (RDP) for Wales 2007-2013 which is funded by the Welsh Government and the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development. Focussing on the environment, ZCF aims to deliver innovative solutions and projects which tackle climate change by reducing our carbon footprint

ZCF Officer Paul Thomas said: “We are really pleased that the Hall has been able to benefit from our project and make savings both in energy and financially. The hall will reap the benefits by saving £1000’s on their heating bills in years to come. It’s a great example of what everybody can do in their own homes to tackle increasing fuel bills, too.”
