On Thursday 6th February I braved the wet and windy weather to make my way into Llanelli town to check out what was going on at Llanelli ‘s longest running open mic night at The Kilkenny Cat.
There was a fair turn out at the pub despite the weather and as well as it being an open mic and Karaoke night the board outside the pub was also advertising the performance of a new local band called The Kerosene Playground.
The Kerosene Playground have only been together since circa October 2013 and are a new band to the gigging scene. There is a real family feel to this band as the Drummer Lee and female lead vocalist Lauren are father and daughter. Lauren’s boyfriend Richard is also the guitarist and second vocalist in the band.
The Kerosene Playground played a set of mostly covers with vocals shared between Lauren and the bands guitarist Richard , songs dependant.
Covers with Lauren on vocals included, (but not exclusively) Zombie by The Cranberries; Sex is on Fire by Kings of Leon and Rolling in the Deep by Adele. Lauren’s voice was moving and she sung with passion and performed an excellent version of The Pretenders song Brass in Pocket which finely displayed her vocal talents which can only continue to grow as the band gig more.
Third song into the set the band played an original song ‘Untold Truths’ with guitarist Richard on main vocals. The song was well played and struck me as reflective in parts but upbeat in others and it will be interesting to see how this band evolve if/or when they produce new original songs to gig with in the future.
Great to see a new band on the Scene with the potential to play various local venues as a cover band but also with the ability and option to branch out and expand on their original repertoire. It will be exciting to watch The Kerosene Playground grow throughout 2014.
