CHILDREN at Myrddin Special Unit in Carmarthen are appealing in person for support to win an £80,000 classroom.

The Unit has made a short web clip featured on YouTube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M4M2akXzFGY asking for people to vote for them in a national competition.

The Special Needs and Autism Unit was selected from almost 400 schools that entered the competition run by education magazine Times Educational Supplement (TES).

It is now battling it out against five other shortlisted schools in a public vote to win the Clearspace Education classroom.

The competition was open to all primary and secondary schools in the UK. The panel of five judges was impressed with Myrddin’s plan to create an Assistive Technology Centre which would provide life-changing technology for their students with severe learning difficulties.

Ceri Lilly, Teacher in Charge of Myrddin Special Unit, said: “Our vision for an assistive technology centre based at our small but very special school, could be just a step away from becoming a reality.

“We would equip the classroom with cutting edge technology to aid communication for our profound and severely disabled children. Please help us get there by voting for us. Then maybe together, we could really help change the very difficult lives of our special pupils, for the better.”

Ann Mroz, Editor and Digital Publishing Director of TES, said: “The judges were unanimous in the decision to shortlist Myrddin Special Unit. Their entry really stood out.”

Carmarthenshire County Council Leader Cllr Kevin Madge is encouraging people to vote for the unit.

“I am voting for Myrddin Special Unit, they really deserve to win this competition,” Cllr Madge.

“I would encourage everyone in Carmarthenshire, and the rest of Wales, to give them their support.”

The public vote is online at www.tesconnect.com/building and closes on April 27. The winner will be announced on Thursday, May 8.
