IT’S arrived! The Carmarthenshire Baton Relay is in Llanelli as part of its month long journey across the county.
The baton touched down at Glanymor School yesterday morning following a 13-mile cycle ride by Ysgol Bro Myrddin pupils.
Already the baton has clocked up 50 miles after spending the last ten days touring schools in and around Carmarthen.
The second leg of its journey will be spent visiting schools in the town including Ysgol y Strade, Heol Goffa, Coedcae, Bryngwyn, St John Lloyd’s and St Michael’s. The baton will also stop off for celebrations at Coleg Sir Gar before heading to the Gwendraeth Valley.
A host of activities are planned including Commonwealth Games themed assemblies, lessons, sports activities and displays.
Organised by Carmarthenshire County Council’s sports development team the baton travels over 100 miles in a bid to inspire the county’s youngsters ahead of the Commonwealth Games this summer.
Senior sports and leisure manager, Car Daniels said: “The baton relay has already inspired many people just ten days into its journey and it’s great to see the enthusiasm from the children taking part in the celebrations.”
The baton was created by QE High School has a local flavour and features a dragon and Carmarthen’s own legendary wizard Merlin. It ends its four-week journey on April 9
