St Clears Town Council launches its new heritage trail on Saturday April 12 with a series of community events.
Their ambitious plans to promote and preserve the history and culture of the Town received a welcome boost when they were awarded funding of £15,000 from the RDP Sir Gâr Carmarthenshire Landscape and Heritage Grant scheme to develop a St Clears Town Heritage Trail.
The new Trail, which will provide a focus for residents to be better informed regarding local history, culture and the environment; will also create a focal point for visitors to the Town; and help promote St. Clears as a centre for tourism and leisure in West Wales.
The route will follow a walking trail of approximately 1.5 miles starting from the Old Market Square in Pentre Road and, continuing along Peillac Way, finishing at the historic Quay in Lower St Clears. It will include interpretation panels at the War Memorial, the Priory Church of St Mary Magdalene, the Town Hall, and the Motte and Bailey Castle.
To celebrate its official opening, there are a number of events planned throughout the day and evening including: entertainment by Ysgol Griffith Jones and Arts Care Gofal Celf, a quiz, history talks, sports and games and a twmpath.
Mayor Jane Rees said: “In addition to these events there will be a series of guided walks organised by the Walking Well Group to follow the Heritage Trail starting from the Old Market Square.
“The event has been co-ordinated by the Town Council with the support of many local organisations including St Clears YFC, St Clears Twinning Association, St Clears Juvenile Sports and AFC, Royal British Legion, Merched y Wawr, WI, St Clears Choral Society, Gardening club, St Clears and District Community Association and their co-operation is very much appreciated.”
Carmarthenshire County Council executive board member for regeneration and leisure Cllr Meryl Gravell said: “I’m pleased that we have been able to provide funding to support this project. It’s exciting to have such a good trail with plenty of interest to local people, including schoolchildren, and tourists.”
Executive board member for rural affairs Cllr Jim Jones said: “Tourism is important for rural areas and the Heritage Trail will play a valuable role in signposting features of interest for visitors as well as local people.”
The Landscape and Heritage grant, delivered by Carmarthenshire County Council’s Tywi Centre, aims to support projects that promote the area’s cultural distinctiveness. It is funded by the Rural Development Plan for Wales 2007 -2013 which is funded by the Welsh Government and European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development and also Natural Resources Wales, National Trust and Carmarthenshire County Council.
