Cooking Safety Warning Following Kitchen Fires

Mid & West Wales Fire & Rescue Service (MWWFRS) is calling upon all residents in Llanelli to be more aware of fire safety when cooking in the kitchen. This caution comes after fire crews from Llanelli having to attend a large number of cooking related fires in the Llanelli and Burry Port areas.

Nick Rees from the Llanelli Community Safety Team said,

“A large proportion of fires in the home are started by cooking. Many kitchen fires happen when people are not paying attention or when they leave things unattended!”

Here are some top tips on how to prevent kitchen fires, as recommended by MWWFRS:

Never leave your cooking unattended – If you are called away, remove pans from the heat or turn the heat down

Keep your toaster clean, free of crumbs and away from curtains, kitchen rolls and everything else that could catch fire. Never store your toaster under the kitchen unit, in case of heat damage.

Check that your oven is clean – fat builds up quickly and is often the common cause of oven and grill fires.

Don’t cook if you have been drinking alcohol or if you’re taking prescription drugs – you may get drowsy or lose concentration

Check you’ve turned the cooker off – when you’ve finished cooking, double check that the cooker is switched off. Never leave cooking unattended.

We strongly urge people to take note of our advice and ensure they have working smoke alarms in their home. For a Free Home Fire Safety Check please call our team on 0800 169 1234 or email hfsc@mawwfire.gov.uk
