A group of Llanelli schoolchildren met celebrated children’s author and illustrator Rob Lewis as part of World Book Day celebrations, thanks to a grant from the Welsh Book Council and CyMAL.

Rob Lewis joined in the celebrations with pupils from Ysgol Y Bynea sharing stories and activities.

He said: “I had a really good time and the kids were great.”

The funding was available to support libraries in increasing membership amongst school children in order to promote the benefits of literacy -a priority for CyMal, as set by the Culture and Heritage Minister.

Children’s and Young People’s Librarian, Lesley Cresswell, said:”The Welsh Books Council grant gives an excellent opportunity for children to meet a real-life author; hopefully this will inspire them to go on and write their own stories, and to come into libraries to find out about the wealth of books and other things that are on offer.”

World Book Day is a celebration of authors, illustrators, books and book lovers. It encourages people to visit their local library and discover the wide range of services on offer, and for regular users to encourage their friends and family members to make use of libraries services.

Carmarthenshire’s Executive Board Member for libraries, Cllr Meryl Gravell, said:”We are so pleased that author Rob Lewis could spare some time to join in the celebrations. The event is for the community and making sure all children get to experience the enjoyment of a good book.”
